Joseph J. Slonka

SLONKA – Joseph J., 88, of Johnstown died February 8, 2018, at Arbutus Park Manor. Born July 19, 1929, in Johnstown the son of John and Angeline (Ozog) Slonka. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Agnes (Skurner) Slonka; brothers: John, Jr.; Jacob; Edward and Francis Slonka; and sisters: Mary Sears; Josephine Mandrgoc; Sophia Barzeski; and Matilda Zieralski. Joe was the last surviving member of his family. He is survived by special niece, Betty Ann Zahurak along with a host of nieces and nephews He was a member of the former St. Casimir Catholic Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and an usher. A US Army Veteran of the Korean War, Joe was stationed at the Nevada Proving Ground where testing of the atomic bomb took place. He was retired from the 10” mill at Bethlehem Steel with 39 years’ service. He also worked at the Baretincic Funeral home until it closed then helped his cousin at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home for several years. Joe and his wife Agnes loved to go Polka dancing and were very proud of their heritage. The Slonka family circle is now complete. Uncle Joe is free, may he rest in eternal peace. Friends will be received from 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home, Inc., 710 Broad Street where vigil service will be held. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Parish, Fr. George Gulash. Committal will take place at Grandview Cemetery with military honors by Conemaugh Valley Detachment #287 Marine Corps League.
