Martha M. (Gretok) Swope

SWOPE (Gretok-Gawel) – Martha M., 70, of Johnstown died January 31, 2018, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born February 9, 1947, in Johnstown the daughter of William M. and Martha I. (Lizanecz) Gretok. Preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Larry Gawel; siblings, Adam; and Nancy L. Gretok. She is survived by her loving husband, Arthur Swope; sons: Larry (Dana) Gawel and Doug (Tracy) Gawel; grandchildren: Larry, Alaina, and Marlina Gawel; brothers: William (late wife Sharon); Ronald (Donna); Richard (Dee); and sister, Marilyn. Also survived by nieces, nephews, step-children: Terry (Yock) Yockimowitz; Sharon (Bob) Rummel; Kirby (Terri) Swope; Scott (Adriana) Swope; and Brian Swope; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. Martha was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife, wonderful mother and grandmother (Mimi), caring daughter and sister, and loyal friend. As her husband Art is fond of saying “A Good Woman”. Martha enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. Martha was known as the Martha Stewart of our family whether she was cooking or crafting. Everything was done to perfection. She hosted an annual Valentine’s Day party that filled her home to capacity. The food and games she offered, unforgettable. Martha’s grandchildren were the center of her world. She spent many hours caring for, teaching, enjoying, loving, and spoiling them. Martha and her husband Art formerly owned Liberty Park and spent many summers entertaining both children and adults from the area. Martha and Art also hosted many family birthday parties, reunions, dances, and tag sales at the park. Martha’s life on this earth was way too short. Her strong will to live is something that will never be forgotten. Heaven has gained an angel. There will be no viewing. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Catholic Church, Fr. Bernard Karmanocky, OFM. Private committal will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
