Catherine Hanson Obituary

HANSON[mdash] Catherine J., "Kay", 84; Lower Yoder Township, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024 at Heritage Ridge Senior Living in Johnstown. She was born May 15, 1939 in Johnstown, the daughter of Samuel and Leoda (Nelson) Johncola. Preceded in death by parents; beloved brother, Nunzio T. Johncola; sister-in-law, Lois (Hanson) Devorick and her husband James Devorick; father and mother-in-law, John P. and Leah (Evans) Hanson; loving husband, John P. "Jack" Hanson Jr.; sons, Timothy and Rick Hanson; son-in-law, John "Basil" Varga; grandson Luke Hanson; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. She is survived by daughter, Karen Varga and son, Randy Hanson, married to Candace (Eckenrod), all of Johnstown. Also survived by sister-in-law, Nancy (Arcuri) Johncola of Johnstown; and beloved grandchildren, Michael and Leah Varga of Pittsburgh; Nick Hanson and his mother Louette Hanson of Heilwood; Anthony and Dominic Hanson; Catherine Hanson-Bennett, Madison and Hunter of Johnstown and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be remembered for her love of dancing and her love of classic movies. She is one of the last survivors of the "What's Trump?, Who Delt?" Pinochle Club. She treasured her family and friends and loved to feed one and all. Those who she considered friends are too numerous to list, however, special friends include Mildred (Eppolito) and Dave Alveres of Johnstown; Carol (Suver) and Bob Bumbera of New Jersey; cousin Mary (Johncola) Voegtly; and aunt Frances (Johncola) Custer. She was a member of the former Our Lady of Mercy Church and attended St. John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown. The family would like to thank Heritage Ridge and Grane Hospice for the compassionate care given to Kay and her family. Friends received Wednesday from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m., at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street. Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Gualbert Cathedral Wednesday at 1:30pm, the Very Rev. Matthew B. Baum. Committal will follow at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to C.O.R.E. or to The Peniel Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center in memory of Kay Hanson. Condolences may be sent at fgozogfuneralhome.com
