Marianne Kiniry Obituary

KINIRY - Marianne, 91; of Johnstown passed away peacefully on Saturday December 15, 2018 at the Allegheny Lutheran Home on Goucher St.  She was born on Oct. 26, 1927 in Johnstown, daughter of the late Margaret Suttmiller Kiniry and James E. Kiniry.  Marianne was a very gentle woman. Very faithful, helpful and supportive to her family, especially for her mother who she assisted as a soul mate her entire life. Marianne was the second oldest of ten children. She welcomed the responsibility of that position. She was always positive and supportive, finding so much joy and happiness in sharing in the lives of her brothers and sisters. As a very young woman, she traveled alone to Rome to visit her brother Jimmy, a Holy Cross brother. She also followed the religious careers of her brothers Msgr.'s Joseph and Lawrence as they moved from parish to parish and her sister, Sister Bridget, a Dominican nun, and her brother Richard, also a Holy Cross Brother, as they moved as teachers from school to school in New York and Washington D.C. She was her sister Peggy's maid of honor at her marriage to Ray Rafferty.  She had a special bond with her younger sister Patty, who look to her for the wisdom and guidance of a big sister. She was especially supportive during Patty's high school years.  After her brother Michael married Ruth Nitch and moved to Florida, and her brother Tommy entered the Marines, she was home alone with her mother and father at 1301 Virginia Ave.  Marianne was a loving and supported aunt to her many nieces and nephews. They loved her dearly.  After graduating from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1945 Marianne went to work for the Johnstown Traction Co. A few years later she obtained employment with the Johnstown Bank and Trust, later transferring to the West End branch. She worked there as a teller until her retirement, and over those years she developed many fond friendships with the people of the West End.  One of her joys in life was meeting with her pinochle group, Valaria Fisher, Shirley Mock, Marie Petak, Lee Calderwood, Mary Grace Will, Mary Ann Minahan and special cousin, Katherine Minahan.  Katherine and Marianne were as close as sisters. Kate had the car and drove. Marianne was her copilot. They went everywhere together.  Marianne was a very active member of St. Columba church. Many will recall seeing her in the rectory office during every social activity along with her cousin Kate, supervising the financial operations. She was also an active member in the Ladies Order of Hibernia's. After St. Columba was closed, Marianne became a member of St. Johns Gualbert Co-Cathedral, Johnstown, PA.  Marianne is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Msgr Joseph and James and her sister Patty. She is survived by Sr Bridget Kiniry OP Sparkhill, NY. , Bro Richard Kiniry CSC , Valatie, NY, Peggy and husband Raymond Rafferty of Johnstown, Michael and Ruth Ann, Melbourne, Florida., Msgr Lawrence Kiniry, Greensburg, PA; and Thomas and wife Carol, Fairfield, PA.  Friends received Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc. Broad Street.  Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the St. John Gaulbert Cathedral, her brother Msgr Lawrence Kiniry, celebrant. Committal will follow at Grandview Cemetery.  The family would like to thank the staff at the Allegheny Lutheran Home for their loving and compassionate care.  Donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society or to Proclaim TV Ministries c/o St. John Gaulbert Cathedral.
