Matthew D'Aversa Obituary

D’AVERSA - Matthew D., 94; Johnstown, passed away on August 9, 2019 at Westmont Woods.  Born January 31, 1925 son of the late Phillip and Marie (Petraroia) D’Aversa.  Preceded in death by sister, Yolanda Macharola and a great nephew, Michael Sebastianelli.  Survived by his loving sister, Joann Sebastianelli; brother, Theodore D’Aversa; eight nieces and nephews; six great nieces and nephews; and three great-great nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a great friend in Thomas Winogrodzki, whom with his tireless attention and dedication, was a true caregiver to Matthew during his time of illness.  Matthew graduated with high honors from Garfield Junior High and Johnstown Senior High Schools, where he also played in their bands.  He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp during the Korean War and worked for GMAC.  He was an active member of the San Rocco Society, where he served 10 years as President, and the Knights of Columbus, for 30 years as financial secretary.  Matthew was an active volunteer and lifetime member of the former St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Woodvale. A member of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, where Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., the Rev. Matthew E. Misurda. Committal will take place at St. Anthony Cemetery, where V.F.W. Post 155 Ritual Team will hold Military Honors.  There will be no viewing or visitation, however, family and friends are asked to attend Mass at St. Clare of Assisi Church.  The family would also like to thank all who contributed to the care of Matthew including Westmont Woods, Three Rivers Hospice, doctors and staff.
