Robert Bulas Obituary

BULAS - Robert F., 83, of Johnstown died February 17, 2019, at Memorial Medical Center. Born September 20, 1935, in Johnstown the son of Joseph and Helen (Zalesky) Bulas. Preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Sylvia Slusser. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol (Pilot) Bulas; children: Dawn (Bob) Davoli; Kris Phillips; Debbie (Dean) Martin; and Bob Bulas; grandchildren: Patrick, Kevin, Paige, Victoria, Connor and Gabrielle; brother, Joe (Shirley) Bulas; and brother-in-law, Bob Slusser. After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in secondary education from IUP in 1958, Bob spent six months of active duty with the US Army.  Following three years of coaching and other duties at Pitt-Johnstown, he spent the next 30 years employed by the IRS, until his retirement in 1992.  Subsequently, he owned and operated a tax consulting business until his retirement in 2015.  After playing basketball for two years at Pitt-Johnstown where he was the first player in school history to score 1,000 points (without the aid of the three-point line) Bob finished in 1956 and transferred to Indiana University (PA). There he joined the starting line-up, averaged 15 points per game, and helped lead IUP  to a 25-3 record and a berth in the 1958 NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. One of Bob's proudest moments was being inducted into the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 for basketball.  In addition to all his accomplishments on and off the court he cherished his wife, children, grandchildren and time at family gatherings. There will be no public viewing, but the family will be having a celebration of Bob's life at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Bob. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the nursing and medical staff of the 6th floor ICU for the care that they provided for Bob. The family is being served by the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home, Inc. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.fgozogfuneralhome.com
