John Groman Obituary

GROMAN- John F., 78, of New Florence, passed away March 5, 2026, at Hilltop Nursing Home in Altoona, PA. Born February 12, 1948, in Johnstown, the son of George and Elizabeth (Wileson) Groman. Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Ratchford; and sisters, Anna Mary “Mamie" Ritko, Denise Goad, Kathy (Tilly) Bond, and Jeanne Jones. Survived by children, Trecia A. McGinniss married to Charles P. III, John E. Groman, and Lindsay Micucci married to Edmond; brothers, Leo Ratchford and Joe Little; sisters, Martha Archer, Jeannie Sanna, and Erma Poore; and numerous other family members. John was a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran. Having served his country during the Vietnam War with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, also known as “The Magnificent Bastards.”, their moto “Second to None”. During John's time in Vietnam, he was a part of the Combined Action Program, also known as “the CAP Program,” and was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his heroic action in Operation Starlite and received a Purple Heart. After serving his country, John went on to receive a degree in criminology. After graduating from college, John began his career as a police officer for the Johnstown Police Department, from which he retired. He also served as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard, 28th MP Company, 28th Infantry Division. He dedicated his life to serving the community in multiple law enforcement positions. John was also a member of the FOP, the VFW, and numerous social clubs. John was a vibrant man who lived life his way: tough, strong, and fearless. Friends will be welcomed on Sunday, March 15, 2026, to celebrate John’s life from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc. The FOP Flood City Lodge will conduct a brief presentation at 5:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc, Fr. Canice McMullen, OSB. Committal will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the Conemaugh Valley DET. 287 Marine Corps League Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of John to Professional Family Care Services - Main Office: 937 Menoher Boulevard, Johnstown, PA 15905, or to Westmoreland Children First at www.westmorelandchildrenfirst.org/contribution-form/. Both organizations are dedicated to providing support and help to children and families in need in Cambria and Westmoreland counties.
