Nellie Skubak Obituary

SKUBAK - Nellie V., 95, passed away on February 8, 2025, in Johnstown, Pa. Nellie was born on November 27, 1929, in Johnstown, daughter of Antonio and Antonia (Garvacka) Twardziak. She was christened Angeline Veronica Twardziak, but was affectionately known to all as Nellie. She was a 1947 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School. On July 4, 1948, she married the love of her life, John F. Skubak, and together they raised eight children. Nellie made everyone feel welcome at any social gathering and hosted numerous holidays for extended family and many neighborhood get-togethers. Whether she was cooking for 10 or for 50, she made it look effortless. Nellie was an amazing woman who always put the needs of others before her own. She was deeply involved in St. Michael's Church and school, always giving her time for any project that needed to be done. She volunteered at Conemaugh Hospital and did the same at St. Vincent de Paul, even into her 90s. Nellie loved to bake and was known for her famous nut roll recipe, which was used by the Our Mother of Sorrows 8th grade class to help raise money for their trip to New York City for many years. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the St. Michael's choir and the Senior Center Serenaders. Nellie remained active, and continued to golf until the age of 91. She recently celebrated her 95th birthday at her club, the Brownstown Fire Hall, among many friends with one beer, of course. Nellie is preceded in death by her parents and husband, John, who passed away on October 26, 2006, after 58 years of marriage. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her brothers, Walter, Stanley, Anthony and Robert Twardziak and sisters, Marie McDonald, Jessie Tokar, Ann Milano, Lottie Moran, Blanche Varmecky and Dorthy Porada. She is survived by her loving children, John Skubak, Johnstown; Bernard (Kathy) Skubak, Columbus, Ohio; James (Michele) Skubak, Cranberry Township, Pa.; Janet (Pat) Hammett, Johnstown; Richard (Mary) Skubak, Pittsburgh; Susan (George) Day, Williamsport, Md.; Dennis Skubak, Columbus Ohio; Daniel (Stacey) Skubak, Columbus, Ohio. Nellie was also survived by 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Whether you called her Mom, Grandma, GG, or simply Nellie, you knew an upbeat and energetic woman even into her later years. She was a blessing to be around and will be missed by many. Friends will be received Friday, February 14, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday February 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Brownstown. Committal will follow at Grandview Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Brownstown Volunteer Firemen's Club or the Johnstown St. Vincent de Paul Society.
