Patrick Ditko Obituary

Patrick S. Ditko, 89 years old, left us too soon on June 13, 2024. He is preceded in death by the love of his life of 66 years Joan (Duray) Ditko and his siblings, Anna Maria Gorka, Steve Ditko, and Elizabeth (Betty) Russak. Pat is survived by his daughters Joanna Opela and Helena Ditko and his sons Patrick J. Ditko, Mark (Marianne) Ditko and Stephen Ditko. Pat has 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Pat started his career as a draftsman shortly after getting married. After apprenticing he became a registered architect in multiple states from 1972 through 2024. He has completed many projects around Johnstown. Throughout his career he has a legacy of 100’s of architectural design and preliminary work some of which he exhibited at the Bottleworks in 2023. His unique style of split faced block buildings can be seen dominating the 900’s on Menoher Boulevard as well as work on Main Street East, the Girl Scouts, and the addition to Westwood School. His specialty love was in religious architectural projects. His first independent project was Christ the Savior Social Hall. Other projects include Pleasant Hills Baptist Church, Mount St. Macrina House of Prayer, St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, the Immaculate Conception Church steeple, Antiochian Village, Ss. Peter and Paul in Portage, and Church of the Brethren apartments. He unselfishly provided his God given talents for friends and family. He loved working as an architect and designer, and was also a painter, iconographer, and did a lot of woodworking projects in his free time. He enjoyed singing in various Byzantine Catholic Church choirs. Pat loved nature and was known as the “Bird Man of Edgewood” filling bird feeders daily and providing an environment for them to thrive. He was active in sports all his life including his love of basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and softball, often keeping up with those half his age. Pat was generous, young at heart and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
