Sweeney – Robert Leo Joseph, 88, Johnstown, died peacefully Jan. 23, 2023, at The Villa Crest, Johnstown. Born February 4, 1934, Bob was the sixth of the surviving nine children to Joseph and Bessie (Seibert) Sweeney. Preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann (Kant); his sisters, Ella Marie Davies, Mary Louise Lowes, Ruth Seth, Dorie Barron; and brothers John “Jack” and Charles “Toby” Sweeney and four nephews. He is survived by three children, daughter, Karen Marie Sweeney, Johnstown; son, Charles Robert Sweeney and wife, Karen Ann (Kalenak), Cleveland, OH and two children, Meghan Lynn Sweeney-Walker, her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Maeve Amelia, Cleveland, OH; and Matthew Kyle Sweeney and Katie Koontz, Jefferson, MD; and daughter, Cynthia Ann (Sweeney) James, husband, Louis “Randy” James, Johnstown, and three sons; Shawn Louis James, wife, Chrystal (Witkowski), and two children, Axel and Austin, Ebensburg; Major Chad Robert James USAF, wife Shawna (Hixon), daughters, Ella Mae and Ivy Ann, Eglin, FL; and Nathan Randall James and Nicolette Harper, Johnstown. Also survived by brother James Sweeney, wife Joy, and many nieces and nephews. Bob loved sharing stories about growing up in Prospect, on Union Street and attending Johnstown Catholic High School. His special talent was doing a train whistle for the kids. He was a huge Notre Dame Football fan. For 48 years, Bob served on Daisytown Borough Council, mostly as Borough Council President, and was a member for many years of the Southwestern Cambria County Water Authority board. He attended St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Holy Name Society, worked the yearly Church Festivals and the Fish Fries. He is a United States Army veteran. Bob and Pat loved their yearly trip to Notre Dame to cheer on their favorite team, their beach trips and spending time with family, especially at the yearly family year. He was always a good neighbor and will be missed by all who knew him. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. at Francis Ozog Funeral Home Thursday. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and interment at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Windber Hospice.
