He was recently honored for his continued contributions with an on-ice ceremony and formally naming the War Memorial Commissary as “Bert’s Commissary”. The War Memorial, where Bert was known as the “Popcorn Man”, held a special place in his heart, where he met the love of his life and had many fond memories.  He is also survived by many close friends, the workers and patrons of the War Memorial were truly like a second family.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving with the First Armored Division out of Fort Hood.
Year after year, he enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables that he happily shared with anyone who stopped to visit. Twice-a-year Bert and Carol make dozens of pies to give away to the their family and friends and for the St. Benedict’s Reunion, a tradition that started in the mid-1980s.
His greatest joy was his family.
